Representation Matters: HIV

Representation matters in the Black community when it comes to HIV because historical stigma has long fueled fear, shame, and misinformation. For decades, HIV was seen as a moral failing rather than a medical condition, which discouraged testing and treatment. Today, modern medicine and technology have transformed HIV care—antiretroviral therapy allows people to live long, healthy lives, and prevention tools like PrEP reduce transmission. Highlighting Black voices—activists, healthcare providers, and those living with HIV—shows that shame has no place in the conversation. Seeing trusted community members openly discuss prevention, treatment, and lived experiences encourages early testing, adherence to care, and informed choices. Representation also builds trust in healthcare systems historically seen as biased, making it clear that HIV is manageable and that support, knowledge, and empowerment are the keys to healthier outcomes.
